Have you been thinking about straightening your teeth, but the idea of traditional braces makes you cringe? Do you have some minor aesthetics to correct with orthodontics, but cannot bear the idea of wearing braces due to your lifestyle? If so, you may be a great candidate for Invisalign.
Invisalign is popular with both adults and teens because the clear plastic aligners are virtually invisible. They can be removed for eating and cleaning, making them more convenient than traditional orthodontics.
What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment used for teens and adults to correct minor flaws with the occlusion (bite) or aesthetics of your teeth. Invisalign utilizes a series of clear plastic aligners that you wear for 22 hours a day over your teeth. The aligners are custom made and are smooth and comfortable. Invisalign can correct a wide range of minor flaws such as:
- Gaps between teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Oddly positioned teeth
While not every single condition can be treated with Invisalign, it is an option for many minor orthodontic issues. If you have severely crooked teeth or other major occlusal issues, or if your child is still growing, Dr. Elaine Gonzales may recommend traditional braces for the best results.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign treatment begins by taking impressions of your teeth and making custom 3-D models for the lab that will create your Invisalign aligners. We may also take some x-rays and photographs to help plan your treatment.
Over time, the aligners move your teeth by creating pressure and guiding your teeth into their ideal positions. Each aligner is worn for approximately two weeks and then changed out for a new one. The slight differences in the aligners move your teeth gradually much like brackets would.
Unlike brackets, you do not have to worry about bits of food that could be caught and create an embarrassing situation. Invisalign offers freedom from floss threaders and special brushes. Even when speaking to someone face to face, they may never notice that you are wearing Invisalign.
Other benefits of Invisalign include being able to eat any foods you like, improved oral hygiene, and smooth plastic of the aligners that will not irritate the inside of your cheeks, a major problem with traditional brackets.
