Root Canal Therapy
People tend to associate root canals (endodontic therapy) with pain. The truth is that the pain associated with root canals often comes from the condition and not the treatment. Typically, root canals relieve the pain you are experiencing from a serious dental issue.
What Causes the Need for a Root Canal Procedure?
The need for a root canal arises when you have a serious infection in your tooth or your tooth has had significant trauma, causing damage to the internal structure. Sometimes the cause can be from untreated decay that has progressed into the pulp of your tooth.
How Do I Know if I Need a Root Canal?
The symptoms associated with root canals can vary widely. From no symptoms at all to swelling and severe pain, they vary from person to person. Some symptoms include:
- Aching pain
- Swelling of your gums
- Swelling of your face
- Sensitivity to hot or cold
- A bump on your gums
- Throbbing pain
At Ever Care Dental, we can often determine if you need a root canal by taking an x-ray. An x-ray can show infection in your tooth or an abscess at the root of your tooth. If Dr. Gonzales sees such an infection, they may recommend a root canal procedure to relieve your symptoms and restore your health.
How Does Root Canal Therapy Work?
First, our dentist will make sure you are completely comfortable and numb for your root canal procedure. Then, she will make a small hole in your tooth so that she can access your tooth’s canal.
Using special instruments, she will completely remove the infection from your tooth and sterilize the area. She may place additional medication in the canal to help with healing. Once your tooth is free from infection, she will seal the canal to protect it.
Depending on your unique situation, Dr. Gonzales may recommend a crown on your tooth to protect and stabilize it. Once you have a root canal, your tooth may become brittle and more susceptible to breakage. A crown can strengthen and prolong the life of your tooth.
Benefits of Root Canal Procedures
At Ever Care Dental, it is always our mission to save your natural teeth, if possible. We know that keeping your teeth is important because missing teeth create complex dental problems such as bone loss. Keeping your natural teeth also helps avoid other, more costly dental treatments like implants and bridges.
